Business and value chain relationships

Every business has a value chain and for many businesses much of the impact occurs within that value chain (scope 3). It is important for businesses to map out their value chain to understand where biodiversity impacts may arise or where risk might be present.

The organisations business relationships include relationships with business partners, entities in its value chain (including entities beyond the first tier), and any other entities directly linked to its operations, products or services.

Guiding Questions

  • What type of business relationships does the organisation have? For example, upstream (supplier) or downstream (customer) relationships. Can you produce a value-chain map?
  • What types of activities are undertaken by those with which the business has relationships?(E.g.manufacturing components or providing security on the premises) This is an opportunity to map out the activities within your value chain.
  • What is the nature of these relationships? Supplier, customer, long-term, short-term, project-based.
  • What are geographical locations where the activities of the business relationships take place?
