The next step in your journey to nature positive involves an understanding of your business operations and how they might affect nature and biodiversity. This is a vital part of the foundation of a good biodiversity strategy and will help you to identify your material topics. The three points outlined in the next section to guide creation of high-level overviews will help you to identify topics that are material to your business and gain further insights into your impacts and dependencies on nature and biodiversity.

This is an iterative process and should be revisited regularly and in consultation with stakeholders and industry experts. The policy landscape is evolving, reflecting the urgency to take action to mitigate risk from the biodiversity loss and climate change crises. It is therefore important to be aware of any policy changes that relate to your business, sector and value chain, and ensure your nature positive journey accounts for any such policy requirements.

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)

The Global Reporting Initiative is an independent, international organisation that provides a global common language to communicate environmental impacts.

GRI has created a suite of standards to help businesses report on various aspects of sustainability. For this phase of the journey, BFBI recommends a review of GRI 1, a universal standard which sets out the requirements and principles for the using GRI standards.
